The company explained it had been keen to take this step to highlight its support of organisations which promote responsible motoring.
It added the action was vital to emphasise the importance of regular tyre checks.
Spokesman Tim Peacock said: "Our decision to become members reflects our commitment to the safety of our customers and other road users."
Other companies which have signed up include tyre manufacturers and retailers, but Volkswagen is the first vehicle manufacturer to make the move.
All the brands that make up the group - Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial, Seat, Audi and Skoda - are now full members and will participate in TyreSafe campaigns.
Drivers with UK van insurance who have an accident as the result of poorly-maintained tyres may find their policy is invalidated.
As a result, they may end up having to shell out for damage to their own vehicle.
