Volkswagen continued to prove popular with those UK van insurance customers who bought vehicles in 2008, it has been suggested.

Figures from the manufacturer revealed the marque increased its share of the commercial vehicle market by nearly one per cent last year.

They also showed the company remained the top van importer.

In addition to this, Volkswagen pointed out its global sales of commercial models grew by 2.9 per cent to 503,025.

Chief executive Stephan Schaller said: "Despite the difficult market trends in the second six months of the year, we have achieved the best ever sales in the history of our company."

He went on to acknowledge that 2009 was likely to be tough, but added Volkswagen stood by its long-term goal of selling 750,000 commercial vehicles by 2018.
