People in the Thames Valley area who want to avoid a home insurance claim this Christmas are being urged to be on their guard against people posing as officials.

This warning has been issued following two distraction burglaries in Finchampstead and Wokingham last week.

In both instances, the people targeted were in their 80s and on one occasion the criminals gained access to the property by posing as officials from the water board.

Commenting on the burglaries, Detective Constable Laura Beeby said: "None of the victims were injured, but have been left very shaken."

She added: "People who commit these kind of crimes and target the elderly and vulnerable are cowards."

Individuals with vulnerable friends, neighbours and family members are being urged to stay alert and contact the police if they see any suspicious activity or unusual visitors in their area.

People were also reminded that the water board does not exist.
