Some motor insurance customers 'making costly mistakes'
Car insurance customers who leave their vehicles running on frosty mornings to heat up and then head back inside the house could be making a costly mistake, it has been claimed.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association warned motorists that if their cars were stolen by opportunist thieves under such circumstances, an insurer may be reluctant to pay out.

Spokesman Graeme Trudgill stated a motor insurance claim was even more likely to be rejected if the vehicle was on a public road and out of sight of the owner's house.

"You have got to have taken reasonable care and if you have not then your insurer potentially may not pay the claim," he explained.

However, Mr Trudgill added there may be certain circumstances where the policy provider might be more sympathetic.

If the owner always had the car in their sight and it was on their property, an insurer may be more likely to react favourably, he stated.
