A final report into the causes of the Buncefield oil disaster has been welcomed by Allianz Engineering.

The independent review comes three years after an explosion and fire at the fuel storage depot in Hemel Hempstead.

Chaired by Lord Newton of Braintree, the Major Incident Investigation Board was established to investigate the causes of the disaster.

Phil Wright, chief engineer with Allianz Engineering, said: "The publication of this report highlights that businesses must make improvements to the way environmental risks are controlled."

He added insurance brokers had a vital role to play in ensuring clients comply with the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations (COMAH) 1999.

Mr Wright pointed out the Health and Safety Executive prosecuted five companies over the Buncefield oil disaster, adding this should serve as a warning to other businesses.
