Brits 'are neglecting their cars'
Motorists could be risking car insurance claims because they are not maintaining their vehicles properly, it has been suggested.

Research by Car Parts Direct has shown a significant number of drivers are not looking after their motors properly and the company warned this could lead to more breakdowns and accidents this winter.

The study revealed 36 per cent of motorists do not service their cars as regularly as is generally recommended.

According to Car Parts Direct, this is particularly worrying as people are starting to hold on to their vehicles for longer - as a result of the credit crunch - and older motors require more attention.

Commenting on the findings, spokesman Mark Cornwall said: "Motorists are working on the assumption that if their car is not broken, why fix it."

However, he pointed out: "Most major repairs and breakdowns happen because basic checks and maintenance are ignored."

In related news, Car Parts Direct recently claimed increasing numbers of drivers were carrying out their own repairs in a bid to save money.
