Penalties for uninsured drivers 'should be tougher'
It may be difficult to stop people driving without car insurance until the punishment fits the crime, it has been claimed.

The Association of British Insurers explained in many cases motorists caught behind the wheel without the necessary legal protection would be a handed a fine which costs less than paying for cover.

Malcolm Tarling, spokesperson with the group, stated: "The penalties do not reflect the seriousness of the crime and do not act as a sufficient deterrent and this has been the case for some time."

He acknowledged fines had a part to play in tackling uninsured drivers, but said they were not the sole solution.

Mr Tarling suggested crushing the cars of offenders may serve as a more effective deterrent.

Elsewhere, a recent study published in the Institute of Advanced Motorists' magazine found young male drivers in urban areas were most likely to risk taking to the road without motor insurance.
