The lifting operations and lifting equipment regulations 1998 and the provision and use of work equipment regulations 1998 came into force on December 5th 1998 under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
Commenting on the laws, Phil Wright, chief engineer with Allianz Engineering, said: "Enforcing authorities are becoming more and more active and brokers can play a crucial [role] in helping to ensure that clients comply with the regulations to reduce employee accidents."
He added there are many businesses that are totally unaware of their legal responsibilities.
Last month, Allianz Engineering called on insurance brokers to offer advice to clients on the safe use of tower cranes to help prevent employee injuries.
