In his Times review column, Clarkson described the new model as a "cracker" and enthused about how good a drive it was.
While he said some of this could be attributed to its "fine chassis", he recognised the engine was also a factor because of its twin independent cam shaft timing, which gave a smooth drive and eight more bhp than the original Golf GTI.
Clarkson concluded it was "sensible well priced and because it's made by Germans, it's well bolted together too".
For those not interested in sensible - including those looking for over-50 car insurance - he also said it was "fun".
Motorists looking at car insurance quotes online should note the engine is 1,569cc, CO2 emissions are 139g/km and the model Clarkson drive was a five-speed manual.
Recently he described the Infiniti FX50S - which he gave one star - "As pretty and agile as Jabba the Hutt".
