Police 'are closing in on drivers without car insurance'
Car Insurance News - Published: 17/11/2008

Spokesman for the group Malcolm Tarling explained the police were using automatic number plate recognition technology and a database compiled by insurers showing all the policies taking out in the UK, in order to close in on road users who were breaking the law.
He stated: "More and more uninsured drivers are being trapped."
Mr Tarling added the increasing success of the police was preventing other people getting behind the wheel without cover.
He also pointed out the whole process was becoming more efficient, as people who were stopped on suspicion of breaking the law no longer had seven days to produce their car insurance documents.
Whether a driver has cover can be ascertained at the roadside by checking a computer screen, he explained.
Figures from the Motor Insurers' Bureau have shown people who drive without car insurance add £30 to the annual premiums of every honest road user.
