Insecure homes 'help burglars'
Too many people become burglary victims because of shortcomings in their domestic security, a policeman has warned.

Sergeant Phil Seeley from Greater Manchester Police's Stretford Burglary Unit made the comments after a pair of burglars were jailed for two years each.

Their convictions for burglary and aggravated vehicle taking came after an incident during which they broke into a home and stole car keys before making off in the occupier's car.

The break in was made easier because the back door of the property was not secure and Sgt Seeley is hoping to ensure other people can avoid having to claim on their contents insurance by making sure they do not make the same mistake.

"It is a fact that one in three burglaries happen because houses have been left insecure. Please do not let these criminals get what they want. Lock up and keep them out," he said.

His advice came as officers in the neighbouring Merseyside force recommended that homeowners implement additional security measures in a bid to deter burglars making off with expensive Christmas presents.
