Motorists warned about unattended vehicles
Car Insurance News - Published: 13/11/2008

The advice came from Superintendent Andy Durkin of the force's Proactive Vehicle Crime Unit following the arrest of three people in connection with a spate of opportunistic vehicle thefts.
Those detained on Wednesday are suspected of being involved in the theft of more than 40 cars. Most of the vehicles were taken during cold weather after owners had left the keys in the ignition while the car warmed up.
Supt Durkin said that while it may be tempting to leave the engine running while waiting for a car to defrost, motorists could pay a high price if their vehicle is taken while they do it.
"It is bad enough losing your car, but often insurance companies will not pay out in this situation, and that would make for a pretty miserable Christmas," he explained.
In addition to increasing the risk of theft, leaving a car unattended on a public road with the engine running is an offence.
