More attention to road safety required in darkness
More road accidents occur when driving in darkness, according to a recent report published by GEM Motoring Assist (GEM).

Around 40 per cent of road collisions happen between 19:00 GMT and 07:00 GMT even though the volume of traffic during these hours is much lower than during the day time.

GEM chief executive David Williams explained that the human eye performs best in daylight because colours are better defined and images are at their sharpest.

He added: "At night we see only a tenth of what we pick up in broad daylight."

Mr Williams urged drivers to pay added attention to the roads at night because it is during these hours that people drink and take drugs.

Car insurance customers have also been warned recently to safeguard their vehicles in preparation for the increasingly darker nights.

According to UK stolen vehicle recovery agency Tracker, more thefts occur in the darkness because thieves are "opportunistic" and use it as a blanket of cover.
