Too expensive to drive
Drivers could be priced off the road because they cannot afford to run their cars, according to What Car?

What Car? spokesman Matt Sanger said despite the fact the price of crude oil has dropped by two-thirds of what it was during the summer, other rising living costs are pushing drivers to cut their outgoings.

Mr Sanger added: "People are starting to question whether they need to use the car for simple journeys, whether they should use public transport, ride a bike or even walk."

Research carried out by Tom Tom, the GPS systems provider, revealed that 66 per cent of car insurance customers are concerned about petrol costs on a daily basis and 44 per cent worry about how the prices could affect their freedom to drive as much as they want.

And 37 per cent of motorists polled said driving a car will probably be too expensive for the average man in the future.
