Road safety committee criticises government

Parliament's Transport Select Committee published a report today damning what it termed the government's failings.
The committee recommended that the government implements more 20mph speed limits across the UK and introduces a graduated licensing scheme whereby the hours novice drivers can carry teenage passengers are restricted.
Increased enforcement of drink driving offences and more roadside drug testing was also high on its list of suggestions.
Safer roads around the country should be welcomed by credit-crunched drivers as fewer accidents will lead to lower motor insurance premiums.
The road safety charity Brake provided evidence to the committee when it was compiling its report.
Its deputy chief executive Cathy Keeler said: "There is no room for the government to sit back and rest on its laurels when road crashes tear apart families and inflict devastating injuries every day."
The charity recently spoke out against Swindon council's decision to pull funding from speed cameras in Wiltshire saying it was "appalled" by its "reckless" disregard for road safety.
