A recent string of handbag thefts have been reported in the north of the city, whereby youths have been smashing passenger side windows and stealing objects from cars queuing in traffic.
Detective Sergeant Chris Mellors of the north Manchester volume crime team said anyone travelling alone should "keep all valuables out of sight, place handbags in the boot or if they need to be kept in the car, place them behind the driver's seat".
Meanwhile, Northamptonshire police revealed last week, that in a bid to tackle thefts from parked cars, it will use trap vehicles equipped with hidden cameras and a spray substance mechanism to help identify offenders.
They will also employ Bluetooth technology to send car insurance customers text messages, alerting them of potential dangers in their area, reports the Northants Evening Telegraph.
