Home insurance is "competitively priced" and should not be ignored by householders, it has been claimed.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, said even in hard times people ought to continue paying for contents insurance.

Householders possessions could be at risk of being burgled or being damaged in a fire or flood, the expert warned.

"We would recommend that you retain contents insurance; contents insurance isn't expensive it is very competitively priced," Mr Trudgill remarked.

In order to save money, mortgage holders may want to look beyond their lender when it comes to taking out home insurance, the expert advised.

Taking out lenders' policies can be more expensive, he added.

Earlier this year, the Association of British Insurers warned against choosing home insurance policies because they are the cheapest.

Kelly Ostler-Coyle, spokesperson for the organisation, said that consumers need to check what each policy covers.
