Drivers told not to cut car insurance
Drivers have been told to avoid cutting the level of car insurance cover they take out if they are seeking to reduce their financial outgoings.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, said there are some forms of insurance that people "shouldn't ditch".

For drivers, motor insurance is a legal requirement, the expert explained, stating that it ought to be a priority purchase.

However, reducing the level of cover they purchase may also carry risks, Mr Trudgill warned.

If people change from comprehensive cover to third-party policies they may not be able to make a claim if, for example, they slip on an icy patch and crash into a tree, Mr Trudgill said.

A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers recently estimated that one in 20 drivers do not have motor insurance.

The expert said that the actions of uninsured motorists cost more than £500 million a year, which is "borne ultimately by the honest majority".
