Car insurance claims 'easier when car is properly maintained'
Motorists may find making a claim on their insurance could be more straightforward if they maintain their cars properly, it has been claimed.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, said a car insurance claim should "go through no problems at all" if the vehicle has been looked after.

The expert said that the "deal" between insurance providers and customers is that if people want to have cover for unlimited liability to somebody else and £1 million for third-party property, they need to ensure their vehicles are safe.

"You have a responsibility to take reasonable care; so if your vehicle is in a dangerous condition, if it hasn't got an MOT and things like that, questions will be asked," Mr Trudgill remarked.

"Hopefully, the majority of people are going to be very sensible and hopefully we won't see anyone misbehaving," he added.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents advises motorists to have their vehicles fully serviced before the start of winter.

It also recommends ensuring that lights are clean and are in working order and that batteries are fully charged.
