Beware of darker evenings, police warn

Thames Valley police has launched a new campaign to warn householders of the higher risk of burglary during this time of year.
John McNicholas, crime reduction adviser, said burglars aim to take advantage of darker evenings so householders ought to consider whether their homes are potential targets.
"Taking some simple and inexpensive steps to make your home look lived in will dramatically reduce the chance of you becoming a victim," he advised.
His colleague Malcolm Wills urged people to use timer switches to ensure they have lights on when it is dark to deter opportunistic thieves from breaking in.
In related news, Humberside police have advised people to ensure their homes are locked and valuables are kept ought of sight to avoid becoming the victims of burglars.
The force also recommended marking property so it can be more easily identified.
