Uninsured drivers targeted by police
People who take to the roads without car insurance are being targeted by police in the north-east of England.

Officers in South Tyneside have warned uninsured drivers that they face large fines and having their vehicles confiscated if caught.

Since the start of this year, 224 people have had action taken against them for driving without insurance in the area.

Acting Inspector Shaun Farish, from South Tyneside Area Command Motor Patrols, said "robust action" would be taken against those who drive without car insurance.

"Their actions are not only illegal, but can prove a danger to other road users as well as costing law abiding motorists both time and money," the officer said.

Uninsured vehicles are often used by criminals and so taking them off the road can help to reduce crime and improve road safety, he added.

A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers, recently said that uninsured drivers are more likely to be drink-driving and behind the wheel of a car that is not roadworthy.
