According to the Glass's Guide, people are opting for a more cost-effective car amid the current financial crisis.
Managing editor of the publication Adrian Rushmore says: "This new survey illustrates how attitudes towards higher-polluting cars are hardening.
"Household budgets are being squeezed ever-more tightly, and consumers are looking for new ways to reduce their outgoings."
In the poll, 38 per cent of buyers say they consider higher fuel costs and road tax as incentives for swapping their car for a more efficient version.
Furthermore, 29 per cent reveal they are intending on exchanging their current vehicle for a diesel model in a bid to take advantage of CO2 reductions and fuel usage.
Those looking for car insurance are reminded that many companies now offer cheaper premiums to those with more fuel-efficient vehicles.
