Drivers can save money by changing technique, says report
By adopting a more sensible and economical approach to driving, car insurance customers could potentially save hundreds of pounds, it has been suggested.

A study conducted by Chevrolet discovered that avoiding heavy braking and acceleration can improve fuel economy significantly.

The firm drove two identical cars along a 411-mile route that included heavy traffic, motorways and steep gradients and found that when driven normally, the Aveo 1.4-litre five door hatchback achieved 42.54 miles per gallon (mpg).

However, when driven in a "methodical eco-friendly" way, the car managed 57.89mpg, the company stated.

Les Turton, spokesman for Chevrolet, said drivers can "maximise their savings" by driving in a more "fuel economy-aware" way.

"Our study proves that by applying anticipation, awareness and gentle acceleration and braking to their driving, Chevrolet owners can get even better value for money out of their motoring," he remarked.

Car insurance customers may be interested to learn that a similar study carried out by the Energy Saving Trust and Ford highlighted the potential environmental benefits adopting "smarter" driving techniques.
