Government dismisses plans to cut alcohol limit
The government does not believe that reducing the legal limit for alcohol for drivers is "the right answer", according to the road safety minister.

A consultation into the problem of drink driving will not recommend the limit be reduced by 80 to 50 milligrams (mg) of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, the Times newspaper reports.

This, it notes, is despite earlier suggestions that the government was considering the move, car insurance customers may be interested to learn.

Speaking to the newspaper, Jim Fitzpatrick said the government is "not convinced" that cutting the limit to 50mg is necessarily the best way of tackling the problem.

"Drivers who are between 50 and 80mg are not the ones we are most worried about. It's the ones above 100," he explained.

The UK's safety levels "compare favourably" with those of countries that have reduced their limit to 50mg, he added.

Last week, a spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers said that drivers without car insurance were more likely to drink and drive and to take to the road in cars that do not meet legal requirements.
