Concern raised over road safety
People in England's most deprived areas are more at risk of being injured or killed on the road, it has been claimed.

Analysing the latest figures from the Department for Transport, road safety charity Brake said people living in the ten per cent most-deprived areas are nearly 1.5 times as likely to be killed or injured on the roads as those residing in the ten per cent least-deprived regions.

Although the government remains on track to meet its target of reducing road casualties by 2010, Cathy Keeler, deputy chief executive of Brake, said there "cannot be room for complacency".

"It's time we adopted a zero tolerance approach to risk-taking on roads and worked towards eliminating all needless deaths and injuries on our roads," she commented.

However, despite motorists potentially risking higher car insurance premiums if they break the law, police in Suffolk have suggested that people are not taking traffic offences seriously enough.

Deputy Chief Constable Jacqui Cheer, vice-chair of the Suffolk Roadsafe Board, said the force was "getting tough on offenders" and deploying additional patrols to tackle irresponsible drivers.
