Some ten vehicles parked at the Central Scotland Islamic Centre in Stirling were scratched between 21:20 BST and 22:10 BST on Monday night.
Superintendent David Flynn, area commander for Stirling, said: "This has been a serious act of vandalism and at this time the motivation for the incident remains unclear."
Officers from Central Scotland police are "determined" to find the person responsible for the crime and are following a number of "positive" lines of inquiry, he added.
Police are keen to trace a man, described as being in his 50s with grey hair and driving a maroon car, seen in the area at the time of the incident.
The force is also investigating the theft of a Benford dumper truck from a building site in Larbert on Monday September 15th.
It is believed to have been taken from the site at around 17:15 BST and was seen minutes later on the back of a trailer travelling on the M73.
