Police secure motorists' registration plates

Police secure motorists' registration plates
Motorists in West Yorkshire are being given the opportunity to guard against becoming the victims of registration plate theft.

West Yorkshire police has received an "excellent response" to its Screw It or Lose It campaign, which offers to fit number plates with tamper-proof screws.

The special screws being used as part of the campaign cannot be removed without a screwdriver, car insurance customers may be interested to know.

Steve Blakeley, neighbourhood watch liaison officer for Dewsbury, said the theft of registration plates is a "problem" as thieves use them to hide the identity of other vehicles.

"Vehicles caught on camera using stolen plates, whether it is for speeding, or in the case of London, the congestion charge, cannot be traced back to the driver and they can then avoid any punishment or charge," he remarked.

Earlier this year, HPI warned that the Mercedes C Class is the most cloned vehicle in the UK, followed by the Ford Transit van and the Audi A4.
