Motorists urged to check tyres
Although many households may be seeking to make cut-backs during the credit crunch, one firm was warned against delaying replacing worn tyres.

Car insurance customers may benefit from the advice offered by Protyre, which stated that three-quarters of motorists visiting its outlets had at least one worn or defective tyre.

The firm warned that people driving on such tyres could be facing a fine of up to £2,500 and penalty points, which could make it harder to find cheap car insurance.

Adrian Walsh, director of Roadsafe, said the findings of the research were "worrying".

"Clearly drivers are delaying the replacement of worn tyres which is a false economy and will place drivers at greater risk of having an accident," he remarked.

In related news, Tyresafe recently reported that nearly 80 per cent of cars on the UK's roads are driving on tyres with incorrect pressure.

The firm launched an online safety guide to help motorists ensure their tyres are in good condition.
