Police extend surveillance to catch uninsured drivers
Police in the UK may expand car surveillance operations in a move which may help to catch a greater number of drivers without car insurance.

The Guardian reports that an Association of Chief Police Officers automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) strategy paper it obtained outlines how information taken from its network of cameras could be used for a number of purposes.

According to the newspaper, there are now thousands of CCTV cameras using ANPR technology that can track motorists.

It is thought the data could be used to find drivers without car insurance, cars that have been cloned and those used by criminals.

However, the plans to develop the system – which sees data retained for a number of years – have drawn criticism from groups suggesting it could contravene human rights in some way.

In related news, Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, recently said the government was considering plans to compare the car insurance database with the DVLA's registered keeper database to identify those without car insurance.
