Police warn residents of burglary risk
Police in York are aiming to reduce the number of burglaries in the area by educating residents about the potential risks.

PC Steve Skeoch, of Micklegate Safer Neighbourhood Team, said there had been a "high rise" in the number thefts recently, the York Press reports.

"A high percentage of these are sneak-in burglaries through doors that are closed but not locked and windows that are left ajar," PC Skeoch commented.

Such burglaries tend to take place at night when people are asleep, he explained, adding that burglars often gain access through open windows and remain undetected until the following morning.

The neighbourhood team is running several educational days for residents, with the first held last week, home insurance customers may be interested to learn.

Chief constable Peter Fahy of Greater Manchester Police recently urged households to tale "sensible crime prevention measures" to prevent them from becoming victims of burglars.

The officer announced that the force was launching a number of operations to tackle burglary in the region.
