Motorists are to be given advice on how to drive in ways that will help them save money, use less fuel and reduces emissions, the Department for Transport reports.
A further £3 million is to be set aside to promote "smarter" driving techniques and provide advice on buying new vehicles, car insurance customers may be interested to know.
Transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: "To help the next generation of motorists drive in a way that is better for their wallets and the environment, the driving test will now assess how successfully they follow fuel efficient and eco-safe driving advice."
Drivers can save a significant amount of money by "taking simple steps", he added.
In related news, a learner driver in Manchester failed her test after she splashed a pedestrian when she drove through a puddle.
Her examiner told her she ought to have stopped and exchanged details with the man as the incident is considered to be a traffic offence.
