Road safety campaign short-listed for award

Operation Pasture was coordinated by Lune Valley community beat manager PC Keith Collins and was set up after the area was found to be one of the worst in the country for road traffic collisions.
The force reports that in 2006 there were 48 highway-disruption incidents that resulted in a number of injuries.
However, a road cleaning trailer and temporary signs for farmer were subsequently deployed in the area and in 2007 there were no serious injuries recorded on the road and a 96 per cent fall in attended incidents.
The project, which also involved safety awareness and education among the local community, has now been nominated for the Goldstein Awards at the International Problem Orientated Policing Conference in Seattle later this month.
Lancashire Constabulary Deputy Chief Constable Mike Cunningham said: "This is an excellent achievement, and is a wonderful example of police and partners coming together to produce schemes which help the community."
Car insurance customers may be interested to learn that Lancashire police are appealing for witnesses following a traffic collision in which an 18-year-old man died on Monday.
