Police warning about letterbox thieves

Police warning about letterbox thieves
Motorists have been advised to keep their car keys out of reach of doors and windows following the prosecution of a thief in Nottingham last week.

Nottingham crown court heard how Jason Huseyin, 19, had managed to hook keys for a Fiat Punto through a letterbox with a stick and returned the next day to steal the vehicle, Nottingham Evening Post reports.

The offender was found guilty of burglary and theft, prompting detective constable Dan Kerr to warn car owners of the risk they face.

"People think once they get inside and lock the door their house is secure, but it only takes someone to have a glance through the letter box and take something," he stated.

Car insurance customers seeking to cut their own chance of being victims of similar crime may want to heed the advice of Thames Valley police.

Reading crime reduction officer Malcolm Willis urged households to close windows and lock doors and to consider fitting timer switches or light-sensitive light bulbs to deter thieves as the nights start to get darker.
