Expecting motorists to abandon cars is "unrealistic"

A town in Kent is launching campaign that will reward people who choose to commute to work without taking their cars, Kent News reports.
People are being challenged to find other ways to work on the final day of Maidstone Goes Green week on September 19th, but one Liberal Democrat councillor has suggested such initiatives were not going to solve pollution problems.
Councillor Trudy Dean of Kent county council said more park and ride schemes were needed, as reducing traffic congestion will not have a significant impact upon tackling pollution in the area.
"I would welcome people using alternative modes of transport providing facilities like safe cycle tracks and pedestrian routes are put in place, but it's unrealistic to expect people to totally desert their cars," she remarked.
Car insurance customers may be interested to learn that recent figures produced by Trafficmaster and the RAC Foundation found that traffic congestions on the UK's motorways and truck roads was 12 per cent lower during the first half of this year, compared with a year ago.
