Police tackle unlawful motorists
Motorists who fail to adhere to the law regarding wearing seatbelts could face serious penalties, it has been claimed.

Cleveland police are undertaking a new operation between September 8th and 14th to tackle the problem.

Officers are expected to pull over any motorists or passengers breaking the law and issue them with fixed penalty notices, which could impact upon the cost of future car insurance premiums.

Acting inspector Gary Hatton, head of Cleveland police road policing unit, said the operation was a combined effort across Europe.

"Drivers have a legal and moral duty to themselves and their passengers to ensure that everyone in their vehicle, and especially a child, is wearing a seat restraint before moving off," he stated.

Police will be paying extra attention to whether children are wearing seat belts as the new school year gets under way.

Last month, Central Scotland police urged motorists to be aware of busier roads as children return to school.

Chief inspector Donald McMillan advised motorists to "alter their driving habits".
