Illegal signs to be removed

Illegal signs to be removed
A council in England is cracking down on organisations that put up illegal signs, claiming that they pose a risk to road safety.

Nottinghamshire county council is paying £10,000 to remove the signs on the A608 at Annesley, the Mansfield Chad reports.

Councillor Chris Baron, cabinet member for environment and sustainability, told the newspaper: "This campaign is essential for highway safety because motorists can get confused if these signs are obstructing genuine signs."

The signs can sometimes be incorrectly secured and can therefore "endanger the public if they fall", Mr Baron added.

Last year, 750 signs were removed, most of which were house builder advertisements, he added.

In related news, Essex county council has put up signs warning car insurance customers and other road users that their speed is being monitored by police helicopters, according to the Associated Press.

Over 20 signs are being erected to warn that the helicopter, which has been fitted with radar equipment, is operating in the area.
