Insurance industry aims to tackle uninsured drivers
Drivers taking to the roads without car insurance are a large problem, but the insurance industry is aiming to address the issue, according to one expert.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Executive, said the organisation had been working with the Department for Transport to develop ways of reducing the number of people without auto insurance.

Recent legislative reforms now enable police to stop vehicles to determine whether they are insured or not, as well as being able to take them off the road if they are being driven illegally.

"Since they've had these powers they have confiscated about a quarter of a million vehicles. So recently we have managed to make a dent in the problem," the expert stated.

"However, it's still a massive problem with over two million uninsured vehicles," he added.

The government recently introduced new laws aimed at creating tougher penalties for motorists without insurance who cause death by driving.
