Van sales "subdued"

The used van market was "subdued" in August as many auction houses recorded poor sales, according to a new report.

EurotaxGlass's stated that a number of auction centres experiences a "patchy performance" last month.

Although the number of people attending such events, which may have included van insurance customers, was "respectable" in some locations, this did not produce higher sales, the organisation noted.

George Alexander, editor of Glass's Guide to Used Commercial Vehicles, said people looking to sell stock may have been disappointed with the lack of interest.

"Most buyers are targeting the nicest stock, and things could have been a lot worse if it were not for these better vans performing well," he explained.

The market for new vans appears to be faring no better, as the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders showed registrations are down.

In July, van registrations were found to be 16.7 per cent lower for the month, which Paul Everitt from the society said highlighted the "pressures" being felt by businesses in the UK.
