Students 'ignoring burglary risk'
Many people of university age are failing to take basic precautions to prevent their homes being burgled, according to a new report.

A survey by Newcastle Building Society found 35 per cent of students have left their house without locking their windows, while one in five admitted to having left their door unlocked.

The company found that as well as making such errors, one in five people within this age group do not have home insurance for their belongings.

Wendy Lee, commercial director at Newcastle Building Society, said: "At this time of year, students returning to university need to think about home contents insurance in order to protect their belongings."

People should also be aware that failing to lock doors can affect their home insurance cover if they are forced to make a claim.

Earlier this week, Fair Investment Company warned parents to check their home insurance before children celebrating their A-level and GCSE results host parties.
