In news which may be of interest to car insurance customers, Barry Ellis from Winsford, Cheshire, received congestion charges and parking tickets from Transport for London (TfL), despite not having travelled to the capital, the Winsford Guardian reports.
After refusing to pay, the 45-year-old discovered that the fines were being doubled and he was facing action from bailiffs, according to the newspaper.
"I've had parking fines before and when it's my fault I will pay for it, but I wasn't when I hadn't done anything wrong," he said.
With the help of local police, Mr Ellis was able to reduce the number of tickets, but it took an article in a London newspaper detailing his experience before TfL abandoned fines.
Drivers failing to pay the London congestion charge face a penalty charge notice for £120, which is discounted by 50 per cent if it is paid within 14 days.
