Car insurance 'must be available to all'
The compulsory nature of car insurance means it must be made available to everybody, one writer has claimed.

James Daley, writing in the Independent, claims that despite the fact that cover is a legal necessity, some groups are priced out of the market because of discriminatory tactics by some providers.

As a result, Mr Daley believes new legislation from the European Union which seeks to ban discrimination on the grounds of gender and race among other factors, is welcome.

He claims motor insurance companies have used statistics and evidence to back up their decisions to charge some groups more for their policies than others.

"Women … have always been lower risks for car insurers, as the average value of their claims is much lower than those made by men … men on the other hand, have fewer but more serious accidents," the writer believes.

Recently, Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, claimed the proposed Equalities Bill, which is designed to tackle discrimination, could lead to careful drivers paying more for their cover.
