Uninsured drivers who kill 'should not get away with a fine'
People who kill others while driving without car insurance should not be allowed to escape with only a fine as punishment, it has been claimed.

Maria Eagle, the justice minister, believes it is wrong that those who are involved in accidents due to not paying attention should be allowed to escape with small penalties, while those who drive without cover ought to be subject to stricter punishment.

She made the claim after it new laws were announced that will see those who cause death by driving unlicensed, disqualified or uninsured serve prison sentences of up to two years, while a careless driving charge could see a five-year punishment delivered.

"Drivers who kill through carelessness will no longer be able to walk away from court with just a fine. Neither should uninsured or unlicensed drivers who deliberately flout the law," Ms Eagle said.

Recent research conducted by Autoglass found 70 per cent of respondents wanted the government to adopt a tougher stance with motorists caught speeding.
