Campaigners highlight benefits of speed cameras
Although speeding fines often lead to higher insurance premiums for motorists, campaigners in Wales have claimed speed cameras are having a positive impact on road safety.

Wales on Sunday revealed that Welsh motorists were fined £9,607,560 over the last 12 months for speeding or running through red lights.

However, Mid and South Wales Safety Camera Partnership manager Jim Moore told the Western Mail that cameras are reducing both speeds and casualties on the country's roads.

"Speeding and jumping red lights are serious offences – it's not just about the fine or points on the licence, but driving above the speed limit can put lives at risk," Mr Moore said.

Cameras can also only be placed at "accident hotspots", rather than where they are likely to raise the most revenue, he added.

Meanwhile, Walsall council is reviewing the use of speed cameras in the area and has already removed two devices from Chester Road, the Express and Star reports.

Councillor Anthony Harris said he was concerned that many people believe cameras are "only there to make money".
