Between January 3rd and July 3rd the law enforcement body implemented a strategy aimed at reducing the number of vehicle thefts as well as the amount of items stolen from cars which has been successful, according to the Hertfordshire Mercury.
Named operation Tarantula, the plan saw thefts from vehicles fall from 235 in the same period last year to 90 while the number of cars taken was reduced from 99 to 47.
Inspector Andy Piper told the publication members of the public can help fight crime themselves by taking precautionary measures.
"Car crime is preventable and the main aim of the campaign is to encourage drivers to help stop car thieves by not leaving any valuables on display in their vehicles," he said.
Should the number of automobile thefts continue to fall it could result in cheaper car insurance premiums as fewer claims will be made to providers.
In other news, there has been a spate of thefts from cars in the Gateshead area, the Journal Live reports, something which may impact on car insurance costs for residents there.
