Fatigued motorists 'do not drive as well as those who are alert'
Drivers who are suffering from fatigue do not operate their vehicles as well as those who are not and motorists are being urged not to drive when tired, something which could have an impact on car insurance costs.

According to research by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), around one in five motorway accidents involve drivers who are feeling tired.

The organisation claims fatigue is unavoidable but there are steps drivers can take to reduce the risk of collisions.

One way motorists can combat the condition is to get plenty of rest before taking to the road, while wearing loose, comfortable clothing is also recommended.

In addition, adjusting the height of the seat and setting the air conditioning to cool can also be beneficial, according to the organisation.

Avoiding driving at night and early afternoon and taking regular breaks can also help to fight the feeling of being tired, the IAM added.

Should motorists adopt these ideas it could help reduce the number of accidents on the road, which may help lower the cost of car insurance cover.

The IAM claims to be the UK's leading road safety charity.
