Motorists want retesting at 70
More than two-thirds of the UK's motorists want people who reach the age of 70 to re-sit their driving test, new research has found, something which may have an impact on car insurance costs.

According to a survey by Motorpoint, the majority of the 900 drivers questioned believe the Driving Standards Agency should introduce compulsory measures which require those who reach 70 to re-do their exam.

David Shelton, managing director of the firm, claims the results show motorists are aware their skills wane the older they get.

"The results of this poll show that people are honest enough to recognise their driving ability does deteriorate with age and that maybe the government should consider mandatory re-testing at a certain age in the future," he explained.

Recent tests by the Transport Research Laboratory found, on average, the over-55s take 22 per cent longer to react than drivers under 30.

Should the government introduce the measures, it could help reduce the number of accidents on the UK's roads which could help drive down the cost of car insurance.

Motorpoint is a car supermarket which was established in 1998.
