Transport secretary plans motorway improvements
A £6 billion investment package to make improvements to motorways and other important roads, which could lead to fewer accidents and in turn, cheaper car insurance costs, has been announced by the Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly.

In addition to the financial investment, Ms Kelly published the Roads- Delivering Choice and Reliability report which sets out ways of combating congestion on motorways, strategic roads and city centres.

Proposals include opening up the hard shoulder during busy periods as well as providing £8 million in funds to local authorities in a bid to help them manage their transport assets more effectively.

"I am determined to get the best from our road network so that motorists have reliable journey times on roads that are safe and well-managed. To achieve this we need a smarter programme of investment," Ms Kelly said.

Recent research from the Road Safety Foundation claimed safe road design will reduce the number of road deaths and injuries by more than one third.
