One in 20 drive without car insurance
One in every 20 motorists in Peterborough drive vehicles despite not having valid car insurance cover, one new study has shown.

Latest figures from the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) found 6,681 cars from a total of 123,134 in the area have no insurance, accounting for five per cent of the city's drivers, Peterborough Today reports.

That figure increases to 16 per cent in the PE1 postcode and last year there were 1,125 crashes in Cambridgeshire involving motorists with insufficient cover.

A police spokeswoman said uninsured motorists pose a significant risk to law-abiding drivers.

"There is still a number of drivers who think it is acceptable to drive without insurance. These people are a menace on the roads, creating a danger to themselves and others," the news provider reports the representative as saying.

According to the MIB, there are around 15,322 uninsured vehicles out of a total of 426,000.

The road safety charity Brake claims £30 of a driver's annual premium is to pay for the damage caused by motorists without adequate cover.
