According to figures from Accident Exchange, the cost of repairs for these incidents amounts to £1.25 billion per year.
Over one-fifth of 100,000 accidents between 2006 and 2008 involved damage to a stationary vehicle, with 80 per cent of them happening on the street while the rest occurred in car parks.
The average cost to repair the vehicles was around £1,800, the research showed.
London was named as the worst city for these types of accidents, know as parked-car incidents, with Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester and Norwich making up the rest of the top five.
Motorists who live in these areas may find their car insurance costs could be affected if they find their vehicle has been damaged and make a claim on their policies.
According to Accident Exchange, 10,000 incidents involving damage to vehicles are reported everyday.
