IAM warns of new French law
Motorists planning on driving to France this summer should be aware of a new piece of legislation in the country that makes it compulsory to have a reflective jacket on board any vehicle with four wheels or more, it has been warned.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists, some nine million passengers will cross the channel by car this year and could be in for a nasty fine if they do not come prepared.

Neil Greig, director of the IAM Motoring Trust, explained: "This new legislation means any person planning to drive in France must carry a reflective jacket.

"It's worth investing in one, before you leave, to ensure you don't end up with a nasty fine when you're on holiday. It would be a shame to get your collar felt for the lack of a legal jacket."

He also warned people to remain diligent and ensure they have adequate car insurance cover when driving abroad, adding that motorists are three times as likely to have an accident or break down when driving in a foreign country.

Recently, car insurance comparison service Confused.com revealed that drivers with penalty points on their license are paying up to 60 percent (£370) more on average for their car insurance compared to motorists with a clean license.
